In the northwest of Uzbekistan, there lies the autonomous republic of Karakalpakstan. Its territory covers the land of the Khorezm. It used to be an oasis region sandwiched between the Kyzylkum and the Karakum deserts. For centuries it was home to a succession of different dynasties, kingdoms and khanates in the region. Now it is different. Most people just drive through it to go and visit the dried up Aral Lake. But in the remote corners of the desert there are the remnants of sand castles to be found that testify of the grand but mostly forgotten history of the place.
