Lonely as a Cloud

Product Description
silver gelatin print 88 x 106 cm, edition 3+1 AP

A region of limestone karst landscapes in harsh weather conditions. When I was there in autumn, cranes were flocking together with low hanging clouds preventing the safe passage to Spain. In the midst of the white clouds, waiting for a break, they kept calling out to each other.

I photographed this mountain 'Le Petit Billiard' several times because for many trips my starting point is the village of Lescun, in the Pyrenees-Atlantiques, pretty close to this mountain. Though the atmosphere every time is very different depending on the weather, there's always a sense of loneliness and sublime around.

'I wandered Lonely as a cloud' is one of the most famous poems of William Wordsworth (and probably of English Literature). It expresses some key ideas of the Romantic Movement about nature and humanity. Essentially it claims that humanity is part of nature and that the natural world - and our bond to it - is essential to human happiness.

Framing : float frame 92 x 110 cm, solid beechwood oiled, inside painted black. The print is waxed so it's protected against accidental moisture and environmental degradation.
